It's Time to Train Social Workers to Handle Child Abuse Cases

The Facts:

75% of children in Tanzania are abused. Even more troubling, the majority of the cases reported are mishandled, resulting in further trauma to the child. While the social workers, community development officers and para- social workers are well intentioned, they lack the training needed to handle child abuse cases.

According to the 2009 Law of the Child Act, social workers are required to respond to all child abuse cases in Tanzania. These professionals receive a one off 10-day training on child protection where case management is only one component of the content with no further support or training. Yet, it is left up to them to manage cases and implement procedures.

Help Us Train 250 Social Workers:
We are looking to fund two comprehensive case management courses, which will help us train 250 social workers in the next 3 years, benefitting 24,000 children.

The courses in detail:
Module 1 is an introduction to the effective response to victims of abuse; it teaches the significance of achieving an integrated response to children’s cases. During this course, participants:
  • Examine the principles of effective case management practice: maintaining confidentiality, seeking consent, making client-centered decisions, doing no harm and responding in a timely manner.
  • Proceed through each stage of the case management process, learning about the reasoning behind the stage and the procedures that are followed. They learn that there is a formalized response, know who is responsible for what, and that the child’s needs come first!

We implemented this course and it was a success. Your money goes to adapting and designing a creative and interactive online version of module 1 by the end of 2016 available to all social workers in Tanzania!

Module 2 equips government social workers with the tools to professionalize their response to victims of abuse. During this course, participants:
  • Deepen their skills in eliciting information from the child and family in order to assess risk and areas of intervention.
  • Learn about trauma and its effects on brain development in the child.
  • Receive supportive supervision in the field, and peer support, debrief and problem solving.
  • Practice presenting cases and debrief about what worked and what not – and why.
Your money goes to carrying out and evaluating the impact on this course on government social workers throughout 2016.

Become a champion for children! Support us in preventing further trauma to victims of child abuse in Tanzania.  THANK YOU!
